William Lawrence, son of Lawrence and Clara (Zitzlsperger) Hoffman was born January 8, 1926 near Glidden, Iowa. He attended country school near his home and after moving northeast of Manning, attended Ewoldt #22 through eighth grade. He should have graduated from Manning High School in 1945 but was drafted into the United States Army in 1944 during WWII. Willie served in the Army from 1944 to 1946 when he was honorably discharged.
He returned to Carroll County, graduated from Manning High School in 1947, farmed a couple of years and worked various jobs including the Manning Creamery Company. Postmaster Paul Vollmer encouraged Willie to apply for a job with the U. S. Postal Service. He was a mail carrier for 30 years retiring in 1984. During the time he was carrying mail he purchased a farm just south of Manning in 1953. After retirement he lived on the farm, raising crops and caring for his cows and calves. After selling off a small section of the farm and buildings, he continued to help the new owner.
Willie was a faithful member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manning and the American Legion Post 22.
On Wednesday, February 27, 2019, Willie passed away at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning, Iowa, at the age of 93 years.
Willie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Earl Hoffman and Julius Hoffman; sisters Harriet Hoffman and Phyllis Bluml; and brothers-in-law Leo Bluml and Ed Long.
He is survived by his sister Marian Long of Carroll, a sister-in-law Ellen Hoffman, a very special friend Olivia Bachman of Manning, and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
