American Legion Gurney Parker Post 357
William Dean, son of Clarence and Versa (Miller) Bowman, was born August 16, 1930, at home in Coon Rapids, Iowa. He attended Coon Rapids schools and graduated with the Class of 1947. After high school William served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was discharged in 1956.
On June 24, 1956, William Bill? was united in marriage with Elaine Johnson at Grace Methodist Church in Paullina, Iowa. The couple made their home in Coon Rapids and were the parents of two children. Bill farmed near Coon Rapids with his brother-in-law Bill Bote for 25 years and with his son Reid for another 26 years.
Bill was a life-long confirmed member of the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids and a 60 year member of the American Legion Gurney Parker Post 357 of Coon Rapids. He enjoyed many card games with family and friends, and while his health permitted, he was an outdoor enthusiast. Bill loved fishing, hunting, camping, and target shooting.
After a long and courageous battle with cancer Bill died at his home in Coon Rapids on Thursday, July 26, 2007. He was 76 years, 11 months and 10 days of age.
Preceding him in death are his parents; his wifes parents Hjalmar Johnson and wife Elsie; sister Clarene and husband Bill Bote; brothers-in-law Don Streeter and Verlin Gellhaus; and sister-in-law Marilyn and husband Bob Peck.
Bill is survived by his wife Elaine Bowman of Coon Rapids; son Reid Bowman of Coon Rapids; daughter Beverly and husband Al Dornath of Urbandale; two grandsons Corey and Kyle Dornath of Urbandale; three sisters-in-law: June Gellhaus of Sutherland; Leah Streeter of Spirit Lake; and Evelyn and husband Rev. Keith Scott of Clear Lake; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
