Willard Lee, son of Everett George and Katherina (Boyens) Farley, was born February 2, 1920, in Manilla, Iowa. At the age of five years, he moved with his family to Perry, Iowa. Bill attended school in Perry. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941, serving on guard duty on railroads and munitions depots in Alaska with the Mobile Ordinance Maintenance Unit. While in Alaska he earned his GED. He was honorably discharged during demobilization in 1945 with the rank of Tech 5th grade. He then attended Universal Trade School in Omaha, Nebraska. Later in life he attended the University of California at Los Angeles to earn teaching credentials for air conditioning.
On July 20, 1944, Bill was united in marriage with Jean Ruth Hunkler at Perry, Iowa. Two children were born to this union. The family lived in Tylor, TX, Aspinwall, IA, Wahoo NE, Council Bluffs, IA, and Omaha, NE. From 1951 " 1956 he operated W.L.Farley A/C and Heating in Iowa after working for a short time for Sidles Company. The family settled in Hacienda Heights, CA in 1956. He worked for Lennox from 1958 " 1977. Bill then owned and operated W.L. Farley, Inc. until they closed the business in 2007 and retired. Bill was very adventurous earning his pilots license as an adult and going skydiving on his 80th birthday.
Bill was a charter member of the United Methodist Church in Hacienda Heights and also belonged to the Elks Lodge and the Masonic Lodge. He was active in the Refrigeration Service Engineering Society and the California Refrigeration Service Engineering Society where he was awarded Man of the Year in 1985.
On July 25, 2008 Bill, Jean, and Kae Rene and her husband moved back to Manning, Iowa. He entered Manning Regional Healthcare Center three days later and died there on Friday, August 29, 2008. He was 88 years, 6 months, and 27 days of age.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents and three sisters: Beulah Mae Baker, Gertrude F. Dammann and Alice Elizabeth Stout.
Bill is survived by wife Jean Ruth Farley of Manning; son Willard Lee Bill? Farley II and his wife Becky of Dover, AK; daughter Kae Rene and her husband Jack Rogers of Manning; granddaughter Karen and husband Ethan Elwell of Elko, NV; and great grandchildren Amber and Bret Elwell; other relatives and friends.
