Wesley Franklin, son of Albert and Thelma (Shaw) Dumdei, was born February 11, 1931 at Ells, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at the Methodist Church in Deloit. Wesley attended and graduated from Deloit High School in 1949. He worked for the Illinois Central Railroad in summers and after graduation until he was drafted into the United States Army on February 12, 1952. He served in Battery B AAA Gun Battalion and was stationed at El Paso TX, Fort Lewis, WA and in Japan. He was honorably discharged as a Corporal June 24, 1953. He was in the Army Reserves for eight years. On June 29, 1953 Wesley was united in marriage with Janet Isabel Conrad at the Methodist Church in Carroll, IA. Two children were born to this union, Kimberli Jan and Scott Wesley. Wesley had always wanted to coach athletics, but after taking some math courses while in the service he changed his mind to a different career path. He worked in Des Moines for Sears, as a bookkeeper for Adams Ranch and for a short time at John Deere both in Odebolt and finally at Farmland Foods in Denison. He was Supervisor Payroll Services for 26 years. After retirement, he became interested in buying, restoring and selling antiques. He, Jan and Scott made trips to Lewisville, TX where he sold his antiques. The family enjoyed many summer trips to Colorado and other places of interest. Because of his love of fishing, they purchased a summer home on Big Spirit Lake. While enjoying their 15 summers there he also sold his antiques and collectables at Antiques, Etc. in Arnolds Park. Wesley enjoyed working there and making many new friends. In his spare time, Wesley spent many hours during the summer planting, harvesting and giving away produce and seeds from his vegetable and flower gardens. Wesley held many offices in the United Church of Manilla where he was an active and dedicated member. He also was active in the local American legion. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals and Iowa Hawkeye fan. Any sporting event and fishing with family and friends brought him great enjoyment. Above all his greatest joy was his family, spending time with them, attending their sporting and school events. When Wesley's health began to fail, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. After surgery he entered the Manilla Manor Nursing Home for a period of recovery. However, he did not make it home, but died suddenly and unexpectedly in the ER at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison on Sunday, February 9, 2014 at the age of 82 years, 11 months and 29 days. Preceding him in death are his parents; brother Mervin Dumdei and sister Arvis Taylor.
