Wayne Halterman

Wayne Henry Halterman, son of Lewis and Clara (McClellan) Halterman, was born February 3, 1925 at Bayard, Iowa. He grew up in Bayard and graduated from Bayard High School in 1943. Wayne worked as a farm hand until he entered the United States Army at Camp Dodge in Des Moines in 1944. His service earned him a Purple Heart before his honorable discharge in 1946. On November 17, 1945, Wayne was united in marriage with Helen Davis at Ogden, UT. Six children were born to this union. Following his time in the service, Wayne worked as a farm hand in the Bayard area for a few years. He then worked as a custodian at the Bayard school, as a carpenter and at the Franklin Manufacturing Company in Jefferson. In 1966, Wayne began farming on rented land south of Bayard until his retirement in 1987. He kept busy working as a handyman and jack-of-all-trades. Wayne was a member of the American Legion and served as the firing squad commander. He was also a member of Bayard's volunteer fire department and served on the Bayard city council during the 1950s. Wayne moved to Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids in 2011. He died there on Monday, May 5, 2014 at the age of 89 years, 3 months and 2 days. He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, his wife Helen, brother Gerald Halterman, granddaughter Nicole, and grandson Nick. Wayne is survived by his children: Raynette Meyers (Greg) of Des Moines; David Halterman of Coon Rapids, Danny Halterman (Rae) of Lake View; Christa Burton of Owasso, OK; Darwin Halterman (Geri Shirbroun) of Bayard; Heidi Petersen (Bryan Beaver) of Grimes; brother Alvin Halterman (Wilma) of Papillion, NE; sister Lenore Rasmussen of Guthrie Center; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
