Vyrl Eldon, son of Otis Lloyd “Lew” Cadwell and Blanche (Nellis) Cadwell, was born March 14, 1920 on the family farm in Shelby County, southeast of Manilla, Iowa. He attended rural school and then graduated from Manilla High School in 1937. On June 2, 1944, Vyrl was united in marriage with Edith Simmerman at the Methodist Church in Manilla. Six children were born to this union and the family made their home on the Cadwell Century Farm southeast of Manilla.
Vyrl spent his life farming the land where he was born. When not caring for his land or animals, he could be found in the Cadwell Repair Shop. In addition to working on neighbors’ machinery, he was always coming up with ways to improve farming equipment. Vyrl had the first five patents on the Westendorf loader, as well as patents on a tractor brake lock and the “Hitch N Go”. His most dependable tractor was “Sam”, which he built from junk yard parts. Vyrl never really retired even though they rented out the farm ground later in life.
Vyrl and Edith enjoyed travelling to visit their children and grandchildren through the years. Their marriage bond was an inspiration to all who came in contact with them. Their strong faith was reflected in every aspect of life and the word of God sustained them.
Due to failing health, Edith moved to the Eventide Nursing Home in Denison in 2013, and Vyrl followed her the next year. The couple celebrated 70 years of loving marriage in the summer of 2014. Edith died at Eventide December 12, 2014 at the age of 91 years, 6 months and 12 days. Vyrl died the next year on November 25, 2015 at the age of 95 years, 8 months and 11 days.
Besides his wife, Vyrl is preceded in death by his parents; grandson Ron Bigley; and brothers Rae Cadwell, Robert Cadwell, Ross Cadwell and Hal Cadwell and sisters Edie Weible and Letha Abel.
He is survived by six children: Keith Cadwell (Linda), Ames; Martha Pearson (Gary), Forney, TX; Kathleen Hout (Jerry), Sioux Falls, SD; Dorothy Ackley (Colin), Farmington, NM; Anita LeStrange (Todd), Paullina; Bryan Cadwell (Valori), Oxford, WI; 17 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; sister-in-law Evelyn Cadwell, Spencer; other relatives and friends.
