Virgil Louis, son of Virgil W. and Tina (Olsen) Reid, was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on May 27, 1926. He lived with his family in Council Bluffs and the Manilla and Irwin areas, and attended school in Harlan. He worked for Pottawattamie County before entering the United States Marine Corps in 1952. Virgil attained the rank of Corporal and served for two years at Camp Pendleton as a shooting range instructor and prison guard. On September 9, 1962, Virgil was united in marriage with Shirley Ohrt at the First Presbyterian Church in Manning. Two sons were born to this union. Virgil worked with his father selling feed in Manilla, and then worked in maintenance for the Manning School for 25 years until his retirement. After retiring, Virgil worked at the Manning Ag Center. In his spare time he completed many woodworking projects for his family. Virgil enjoyed fishing in Canada with his sons and taking care of his grandchildren. He was a member of the Emil Ewoldt Post 22 of the American Legion and the First Presbyterian Church in Manning. Virgil was fighting cancer and a recent stroke when he became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in Manning earlier this month. He died there on Thursday, March 16, 2006, at the age of 79 years, 9 months and 17 days. Preceding Virgil in death are his parents, sister Leoma Holmes and grandson Jackson Reid. He is survived by wife Shirley Reid of Manning; sons Brian Reid and wife Lisa of Carroll, and Barry Reid and wife Lori of Denison; grandchildren Maddison, Kennedy and Reagan Reid, and Jesse and Jadyn Reid; sisters Dolores Arrick of Rogers, Arkansas; Shirley and husband George Rehfeldt of Council Bluffs; and Barbara and husband Beauford Haizlip of Council Bluffs; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
