Viola Spieker

February 4, 1911 — May 7, 2016

Viola Agnes, daughter of William and Ersa (Carr) Steininger, was born February 4, 1911 in Woonsocket, SD. She moved with her family to Halbur, IA where she attended St. Augustine’s School.  Following her schooling and prior to her marriage she did housework, worked at the Burke Hotel in Carroll and cared for children.

Viola was united in marriage with Lawrence Fred Spieker on January 19, 1932 at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll.  Twelve children were born to the union. The couple worked and farmed near Templeton. In 1954, they moved to a farm southwest of Manning and then moved to a home in Manning in 1975.  After her children graduated from high school she worked at the Manning General Hospital, retiring at the age of 80. Lawrence died in 1983. One of their favorite past-times together was square dancing and traveling many miles to visit their children. From her home in Manning, Viola moved to the Terrace Apartments. Viola enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking and playing cards, but most of all she enjoyed family gatherings. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish, Manning, Altar and Rosary Society, 76 year member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas, VFW Auxiliary, Manning Hospital Auxiliary, Tri-County Social Club and was a volunteer at Manning Regional Healthcare Center Snack Bar. In 2006 she became a resident of the Manning Plaza where she received wonderful care. She died there on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the age of 105 years, 3 months and 3 days. She was the oldest ever living Manning resident.

Besides her parents and husband, Viola is preceded in death by her son Duane (Audrey) Spieker; daughter Norma (Don) Petersen; son Larry Spieker; sons-in-law Roger ‘Blackberry’ Vollstedt and Joe Kral; great great grandchild Kade Rasmussen; brothers Lloyd (Leta) Steninger, Wilbur (Evelyn) Steininger; sister Bertha (Clarence) Lampe; and half-sister Delores (Allen) Perkins.

She is survived by nine children Rosie Vollstedt of Manning, Jerry Spieker (Sue) of Norwalk, Marilyn (Dick) Popp of Bradenton, FL, Carol Kral of Auburn, Paul (Barb) Spieker of Larkspur, CO, LaVerne “Butch” (Jackie) Spieker of Renton, WA, Karen (Leroy) Wegner of Warrensburg, MO, Donna (Larry) Mohr of Mesa, AZ, Randy (Melinda) Spieker of Tualatin, OR; daughter-in-law Becky (Larry) Spieker of Henderson, NV; 38 grandchildren; 68 great grandchildren; 23 great great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
