Vera Russ

Vera Irene, daughter of Warren and Emma (Pevestorf) Long, was born January 29, 1919, on the family farm in Guthrie County south of Coon Rapids, Iowa. Vera attended country school near her home and then worked at Armours Creamery. During World War II, Vera and her sister went to California to find work. In the spring of 1944, Vera was united in marriage with Wilburn William Russ at San Diego, California. One daughter Kay was born to this union. Vera and Bill made their home in Coon Rapids where Vera worked at the Garst Store and operated a laundromat. She eventually worked as a lab tech with Garst and Thomas Seed Company and retired in the early 1980s. Vera attended the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids. She enjoyed gardening and flowers, shopping, cleaning her home, cooking, eating out, crocheting and watching basketball, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes. She was very independent, walked everyday and cherished spending time with her grandsons. On Friday, February 3, 2006, Vera died at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll, Iowa, following a lengthy illness. She was 87 years and 5 days of age. Vera was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Kathryn and husband Robin Herbert. She is survived by her daughter Kay and husband Jim Galloway of Coon Rapids; two grandsons Michael Galloway and wife Jennifer of Urbandale and Jon Galloway of West Des Moines; a great-granddaughter Avery Kate Galloway of Urbandale; two brothers Fred Long and wife Evelyn and Earl Shorty? Long and wife Helen, all of Coon Rapids; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
