Vera Loretta, daughter of Herman and Mary (Gementz) Fick, was born at Orange Township, south of Coon Rapids, Iowa on November 14, 1931. She grew up in Guthrie County, Iowa and attended schools at Bayard, Iowa through the 11th grade.
Vera worked in cafs in various places until her marriage. She was united in marriage with Max Mason Mozena on March 6, 1954 at Grand Junction, Iowa. Two sons were born to this union. The family lived in the Coon Rapids-Bayard area and Vera was a homemaker, as well as taking seasonal and occasional part-time work. In her lifetime, Vera loved to go dancing, camping, fishing, gardening, playing euchre and enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Max died in 1991 and Vera continued to live at their home in Bayard. She had battled cancer for a year before recently moving to the Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa. Vera died there on Monday, July 20, 2009 at the age of 77 years, 8 months and 6 days.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers: Roy Fick; Clarence Fick and John Fick; and three sisters: Irene Meyers; Dorothy Hofbauer and Lula Sigler.
Vera is survived by her two sons Gary Mozena and wife Sherry of Bayard and Tom Mozena of Guthrie Center; five grandchildren: April Seydel, Cynthia Knutsen, Justin Mozena, Brent Mozena and Summer Mozena; eight great-grandchildren; brothers Howard Fick of Portland, OR and Duane Fick and wife Emma of Altoona; sisters Esther Holsworth of Altoona and Mildred Scheffers of Portland, OR; other relatives and friends.
