After one year at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Tom was drafted into the United States Army. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his honorable discharge in 1969, he continued his schooling at Westmar College at Le Mars. On June 27, 1970, Tom was united in marriage with Shirley Hammond at Immaculate Conception Church in Sioux City.
