Thomas Dalton, son of Raymond and Rose (Kruger) Rutherford, was born November 29, 1940 at Manning, Iowa. He grew up in Manilla and attended Manilla schools. After completing his education, Tom started working on a paving crew before starting at Farmland Foods in Denison. For a number of years he helped run the Rusty Nail café in Manilla. Tom worked at MJM in Manning until he suffered a stroke at age 58 years, forcing him to retire.
On September 30, 1961 Tom was united in marriage with Carolyn Ward at Denison. They were the parents of three sons and lived the majority of their life in Manilla.
Tom was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manilla and the M&M Golf Course. He thoroughly enjoyed his time golfing and being with his buddies.
Tom had been in failing health for several years and took a turn for the worse this past year. He died suddenly and unexpectedly at Manning Regional Healthcare Center on Thursday, February 25, 2016, at the age of 75 years, 2 months and 27 days.
Preceding him in death are his parents; sister Marlys Karsten (Wilbur ‘Casey’); brother Lanny Rutherford; brother in law Bob Sonderman and daughter in law Laurie Wilson Rutherford .
Tom is survived by his wife Carolyn Rutherford of Manilla; sons Jerry Rutherford of Bethel, Alaska; Jay Rutherford (Sheri) of Lebanon, MO and Lynn Rutherford (Cynthia) of Jamestown, OH; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brothers Ray Rutherford (Kay) of Manilla and Wayne Rutherford (Donna) of Roca, NE; sisters Diane Sonderman of Earling and Gloria Lohrman (Ron) of Manilla; sister in law Maureen Rutherford of Estherville; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
