Sylvia Mae, daughter of John and Ella (Lorenzen) McClatchey, was born August 7, 1927, at Grant Center, Iowa.  In 1934, when Sylvia was in the second grade, the family moved to Manilla.  She was a member of the basketball team and graduated from Manilla High School.

On June 18, 1946, Sylvia was united in marriage with Alvin Albert Max Bandow at Manilla.  They lived and farmed west of Manilla, then moved to town in 1951.  In 1963 they moved to Iowa Falls, where Sylvia worked as the head cook in school until 1975.  Alvin retired in 1982 and the next year the couple moved back to Manilla.

Sylvia was the matriarch of her family.  She loved family visits and enjoyed cleaning and keeping her house.  Sylvia was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla and member of the Home Community Club.  She was also past president of the American Legion Womens Auxiliary.  Sylvia also volunteered and sewed at the Manilla Manor Nursing Home.

Over the years Sylvia faced many health challenges.  Following an extended hospital stay and a short time at the Manning Plaza Nursing Home, she died at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center on Saturday morning, May 24, 2008.  She was 80 years, 9 months, and 17 days of age.

Preceding her in death are her parents; sons Ronald Bandow and Russell Bandow; daughter Roberta Bandow, in infancy; granddaughters Jennifer and Kelly Bandow; four brothers: Earl, Ronald Dean, Carl and Gail McClatchey; and sister Annabelle Meyer.
