Stephen Kenneth, son of Kenneth and Verna (Ehrichs) Kirk, was born September 24, 1942 in San Diego, CA where his father was stationed with the United States Navy. Shortly after his birth he and his mother moved to Denison, IA to be nearer his grandparents. Steve was baptized on May 2, 1943 at the Lutheran church in Denison. His parents divorced in April of 1946. The next year his mother married Marvin F. Meggers who adopted Steve. Marvin died as the result of an auto accident on June 25, 1952. Steve completed grades K - 7 in the Denison schools and then moved with his mother to Carroll where he graduated from Carroll High School in 1960. While he was in high school his mother married Harold Buthman in 1958. After completing his schooling, Steve met his half-brother Wayne Kirk and half-sister Leni Williams in San Diego. His birth father was out to sea, so he did not see him. On June 18, 1973, Steve was united in marriage with Shirley Boers at Carroll and enjoyed being a step-father to Brenda and Kari Boers. While living in Carroll he worked at Peter's Motors and later at his own auto repair shop. His marriage to Shirley ended in divorce in February 1981. Steve moved to Mapleton where he worked in a body shop and later moved to Des Moines. In the early 1990s Steve was reunited with his birth father and had a relationship with him until his birth father died on June 9, 2002. In 1993, Steve was united in marriage with Dorothy Bendixen of Ida Grove in Des Moines. They bought an acreage in Douglas Township, Audubon County, Iowa and later divorced. Steve remodeled the house, added on a double car garage and deck. He built a heated shop and enjoyed working on cars. He became acquainted with his neighbor Sam Grabill and they worked on cars together. He was very appreciative of the Grabill's support and was pleased to sell his acreage to Dave Grabill. Steve would always ask if the boy' still lived there and was getting along. When Steve's health began to fail and he could no longer remain at home he entered the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in July of 2006. He knew a can of Diet Coke would always be available in the refrigerator down the hall. Steve died there on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at the age of 68 years, 4 months and 9 days.
