Ruth Marie Anna, daughter of Reverend William D. and Louise (Hackbarth) Kanning, was born April 11, 1927, Palm Sunday, in Fergus Falls, MN.  She was baptized into the Lutheran faith by her father on May 15, 1927 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. In 1930 the family moved to Annandale, MN where her father was pastor of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Ruth attended Bethlehem Lutheran School through the eighth grade. It was there that she was confirmed. She completed her schooling at Maple Lake High School in Minnesota in 1945. The family moved in the fall of 1946 when her father accepted a call to Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Audubon County, Iowa. She met Robert D. Hansen, a farmer in the area. They were united in marriage on November 5, 1950. To this union seven children were born. They continued farming and Ruth was a homemaker and devoted wife. She was a loving mother to the six children that lived. Ruth and Robert were loyal members of Trinity Lutheran Church where Ruth taught Sunday School and Bible School and was a member of Ladies Aid Society. She was a member of LWML, served as zone president, and enjoyed sewing baby layettes for Lutheran World Relief. Her faithfulness was evidenced in all the deeds of her daily life.

After moving to Iowa, Ruth kept in touch with her Minnesota friends and relatives and thoroughly enjoyed visits there. Ruth and Robert transferred their church membership to St John’s Lutheran Church in Audubon when Trinity disbanded in 1999. She was also a charter member of the Gray Community Betterment Corporation. In addition, Ruth enjoyed gardening, collecting and repairing dolls and participating in the Audubon County Fair with numerous entries in photography, antiques and baking, especially pies.

The couple moved to an apartment in Manning in 2014 and transferred their church membership to Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. When Ruth’s health began to fail, she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in 2015 where her faithful husband joined her after a short time. She died there on Wednesday, January 20, 2016, at the age of 88 years, 9 months and 9 days. Preceding her in death are her parents; one child at birth and two brothers William (Bill) Kanning (Bonnie) and Richard (Dick) Kanning.

Ruth is survived by her husband Robert D. Hansen of Manning; six children Barbara Anderson (Steve) of Cedar Rapids, Colleen Minis (Stuart) of Shrewsbury, NJ, Craig Hansen of Sioux City, David Hansen (Paula) of Omaha, NE, Jean Hansen Houseman of Silvis, IL and Gary Hansen (Jeanette) of Florence, KY; 8 grandchildren; sister in law Leola Kanning, of Atlantic; brother in law Norman Hansen (Roni) of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
