Robert Sterner

Robert Albert, son of Albert and Gertrude (Becker) Sterner, was born May 15, 1929, on the family farm Southeast of Willey. He attended grade school near Willey and graduated from Carroll High School in 1946. Bob helped his father farm after school until 1951 when he enlisted in the Army. He was honorably discharged in 1953. Robert was united in marriage with Bessie Garcia on September 26, 1953, in an Army Chapel in Denver, CO. Two children were born to this union. Bob farmed near Willey for most of his life. He retired at the age of 62 but never truly stopped working. His favorite hobby was farming and was known for his work ethic. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion DeWitt-Loustaunau Post 20 in Dedham. Bob enjoyed playing cards, watching TV, listening to western music, and especially spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Bob was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease around 2002 and suffered from COPD. He was able to remain at home near Willey with the loving care of his wife and family. Bob died there on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, at the age of 84 years, 7 months and 2 days of age. Robert was preceded in death by his parents Albert and Gertrude Sterner and his son David Sterner in 2012. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Bessie Sterner of Willey; daughter Susan and husband John Chism of St. Cloud, FL; grandchildren: Todd Sterner of Willey; Sarah Sterner and boyfriend Sebastian Metheny of Carroll; Alicia (Sterner) Currera and wife Cortney of Omaha, NE; and Christian Sterner of Carroll; stepgrandchildren: Michael Halbur and wife Mandy (Wells) of Dubuque; Holly (Halbur) Schaefer and husband Brian of Carroll; and Amanda Halbur and boyfriend Adam Wempe of Carroll; great grandchildren: Kylesa Metheny; Kenedy, Shelby and Destiny Schaefer; and Jaxon Halbur; along with many other relatives and friends.
