Rita Halbur

April 29, 1930 — May 9, 2012

Rita Emma, daughter of Ben and Emma (Beyerink) Steffes, was born April 29, 1930, near Roselle, IA. The family moved to Carroll when Rita was one year old. She attended St. Lawrence School through the eighth grade and then remained at home to help her parents. On June 17, 1947, Rita was united in marriage with Daniel Edward Halbur at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. They were the parents of nine children. Rita was a dedicated homemaker. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards, fishing, word-find books and going to the area casinos. Above all, she relished spending time with her children and their families. Following her husband Daniel's death on December 10, 2003 she remained in their home. Rita's health declined after a fall in her home. She died May 9, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. She was 82 years and 10 days of age. Besides her husband, Rita was preceded in death by her parents; children David D. Halbur, Gerard J. Halbur in infancy, Russell N. Halbur and Annette K. Vaughn; grandson Bryen Halbur; daughter in law Mona Halbur; siblings Loretta Broich (Frank), Eva Grossman (Lawrence), Elnora Mueggenborg (Pete), Hilbert Steffes (Virginia), Albert Steffes, Rosemary Steffes, William Steffes and Paul Steffes; in-laws: Ed Halbur (Betty) and Shirley Korwes (Darrell). She is survived by her children: Diane Gross (Joe) of Carroll; Roger L. Halbur of Omaha, NE; Beverly Lorenz (Roy) of Byron, IL; Arthur P. Halbur of Rockdale, IL; and Randall L. Halbur (Patti) of Guthrie Center; son in law Larry Vaughn (Jenny) of Indianola; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; brother Bernard Steffes and friend Peggy of Washington; brothers and sisters in law: Irene Steffes of Storm Lake; Leonard Halbur (Darlene) of Carroll; Wayne Halbur of Des Moines; Gene Halbur (Diane) of Forrest Lake, MN; Dorothy Dunn of Johnston; Mary Neuerberg (Glenn) of Colorado; Ruth Overmohle (Bill) of Dublin, OH; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
