Richard L. Underwood

October 9, 1951 — October 3, 2019

Richard “Rick” Lee, son of Paul Ralph and Miriam Elaine (Etler) Underwood was born October 9, 1951 in Sioux City, Iowa. He grew up in Sioux City and graduated from East High School in 1971. Rick then attended mechanic school in Omaha, Nebraska and worked for Graham Buick.

While in Omaha, Rick met Mary L. Bauer.  On September 14, 1974 they were united in marriage at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, Iowa.  Two children were born to this union.  Rick and Mary made their home in Omaha until he joined the U.S. Army in 1975.  The family lived in Germany for two years and then in Colorado Springs, Colorado until Rick received his honorable discharge in 1977.  The couple then moved to Denison, Iowa.

Rick then worked at Johnson Motors in Denison for 25 years as a car mechanic. After that he worked at Black Hills Energy until a heart condition caused him to retire.

Rick loved to fish, hunt, play pool, and go target shooting with his grandkids. Every year, he would go to the Boundary Waters at Ely, Minnesota with his childhood friend Mike. He also liked to take the grandkids fishing at local farm ponds. Rick was a good man who would tease anyone but also helped anyone who asked.

Rick had experienced a period of declining health and late on Thursday, October 3, 2019 he passed away unexpectedly at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa.  He was 67 years, 11 months and 25 days of age.

He was preceded in death by his father Paul Underwood, daughter Billie Brink, and son Josh Underwood.

Rick is survived by his wife Mary Bauer Underwood of Denison; mother Miriam Underwood of Sioux City; brother Ron Underwood and wife Mary of Sioux City; eight grandchildren: Codie Fineran of Denison; Colten Brink of Manning; Colby Brink of Ames; Collin Brink, stationed in England; Hunter Underwood, Croix Brink, Aschtian Montange and Michael Madeira, all of Denison; and by other relatives and friends.
