Raymond Joseph, son of John and Anna (Scherbring) Glass, was born on April 16, 1915, on the family farm southwest of Carroll, Iowa. He attended St. Augustines school in Halbur. In 1929 the family moved to the Odebolt area and he attended St. Martins school. Ray then worked on the farm with his father.
In 1943 Ray was drafted into the United States Army. He served as a Combat Engineer in Africa, England, France, Luxemburg, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Ray was involved in five major WWII battles, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy invasion, and was awarded five bronze stars and a silver battle star. Ray was honorably discharged in November 1945 and went back to work farming with his father. He moved to a farm west of Carroll in 1948, and it is on this farm that he would raise row crops and livestock for the rest of his life.
Ray was united in marriage with Zeta Ann Derner on November 25, 1950 at St. Bernard Church in Breda. After his retirement from active farming in 1993 and the death of his wife in 1998, he continued to live on the farm with the help of his eldest son, Neil. Ray was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Arcadia, an honorary life member of Knights of Columbus in Carroll and member of the American Legion Ehlers-Gerken Post 694. He was a board member of the Farmers Cooperative Elevator in Arcadia for fifteen years, serving as vice-president for seven years. Ray traveled to many 486th Engineer reunions with his friends from the Army. He was an avid baseball fan and told many stories about playing against major leaguers while in the Army. Welding was a skill that Ray made use of on the farm, and he custom built many implements. He also enjoyed working on engines and playing the guitar in his younger years.
On Saturday morning August 9, 2008, Ray died suddenly and unexpectedly at St. Anthonys Hospital in Carroll, Iowa. He was 93 years, 3 months and 24 days old.
Preceding him in death are his parents; wife Zeta Glass; infant sons Joseph and Gerard Glass; grandson Matthew David Anderson-Glass; brother Robert Glass and brother-in-law Maurice Hacker.
He is survived by his sons Neil Glass of Carroll and Alan Glass and wife Dana Anderson-Glass of Eagan, MN; grandchildren Nicholas and Kierstin Anderson-Glass; sister Mary Agnes Hacker of Bettendorf; sister-in-law Marie Glass of Carroll; brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
