Rachel Ruth, daughter of Carl and Julia (Hoch) Fahrenbruch, was born April 3, 1922 in Culbertson, Hitchcock County, Nebraska. She moved with her family to various farms in western Nebraska while she was growing up and attended rural schools near where they were living. She was baptized on August 27, 1922 at German Congregational Church in McCook, NE. Later, on June 20, 1927, Rachel was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Trenton, NE. After Rachel completed her education, she remained at home to help her parents. When growing up Rachel enjoyed going to parties held at the church and school. On April 3, 1946, Rachel was united in marriage with Glenn Howard Steinke at the Lutheran Parsonage in Culbertson. They were the parents of two children. Rachel worked at a variety store for a short time, however she was primarily a homemaker. In 1957 Glenn took a job with Puck Implement, a John Deere dealership in Manning, Iowa where they moved and made their home. Rachel was an accomplished seamstress. She worked for Mueller's Furniture and others making draperies and doing alterations. After many years, her hands started to fail her from handling the heavy drapery material and she retired. Rachel was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and Ladies Aide in Manning. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Nebraska. Her sewing left her little time for other hobbies; however, she enjoyed visiting with her many friends over the years. When her husband's health began to fail, Rachel cared for him at home before he became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home. After a short time there he died on October 1, 2002. Rachel remained in their home in Manning until she downsized and moved to the Terrace Apartments in June of 2009. Later that year she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home. Rachel died unexpectedly at the Manning Plaza on Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at the age of 88 years, 11 months and 12 days.
