Rachel Beatrice, daughter of Stephen and Mary (Andrea) Houska, was born May 4, 1901, at Ola, South Dakota. She attended school near her home and at the age of 12 moved with her family to Mahnomen, Minnesota. She attended school there through the eighth grade and worked at home and at a grocery store.
On June 30, 1930, Rachel was united in marriage with Henry Dorpinghaus at Crookston, Minnesota. Four children were born to this union. As Henry worked in construction, the couple traveled about that area. In 1951, they settled in Coon Rapids where Rachel was a housewife and Henry was a chiropractor. On December 20, 1980, Henry died and Rachel remained in their home until becoming a resident of Thomas Rest Haven nursing home in June of 2002.
Rachel was a member of Annunciation Church and the Catholic Ladies Guild, as well as the Bible Study Club, Birthday Club and card clubs. For many years, she was a local Red Cross volunteer. Rachel enjoyed making quilts and needlework, baking breads and pastries and cooking. She treasured her time with her children and grandchildren.
On Monday, August 24, 2009, Rachel died at the Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids, Iowa. She was 108 years, 3 months and 20 days old.
Rachel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Louis and Cecil Houska, sisters Mabel Radtke and Alice Houska, son-in-law Merle Hilgenberg, and daughter-in-law Caroline Dorpinghaus.
She is survived by her children: Darle Dorpinghaus and wife Louise of Kansas City; Eloise Hilgenberg of Waukee; Keith Dorpinghaus and wife Carlene of Coon Rapids; Kay and husband Michael Anthofer of Coon Rapids; 18 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
