Phyllis Sheer

Phyllis Mae, daughter of Theodore and Ina (Littlefield) Nelson, was born September 11, 1925, at Omaha, NE. The family lived in the Brayton/Exira area and after the family moved to Audubon she graduated from Audubon High School in 1945. Phyllis worked in a secretarial role at an insurance company in Des Moines for a time. On July 14, 1947, Phyllis was united in marriage with Kenneth Edwin Sheer at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Audubon. The couple farmed in Audubon and Guthrie counties until 1970. The family moved to Coon Rapids for a few years before settling in Bayard. Phyllis worked at the Bayard Care Center, St. Anthony Hospital housekeeping department and Coon Rapids-Bayard school district office. She retired when her health declined. Phyllis was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Coon Rapids. Through the years Phyllis liked to garden and can produce, crochet and go to card club with Edwin. Following Edwin's death in 1995, Phyllis continued to live in her home in Bayard. Phyllis moved to the Thomas Rest Haven nursing home in Coon Rapids in 2012. She died there on Saturday morning, March 28, 2015, at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 14 days. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Kenneth Edwin Sheer; sons Merlin (1972) and Richard Sheer (2013); granddaughter Heather Sheer, in infancy; daughter-in-law Louise Sheer; and brother-in-law Mike McConnell. Phyllis is survived by her sons: John Sheer (Diana), Bayard; Wendell Sheer (Janet), Kempner, TX; and Wayne Sheer, Davenport; daughter-in-law Deb Smouse, Carroll; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; brother Clifford Nelson (Peggy), Des Moines; sister Darlene McConnell, Atlantic; sister-in-law Della (Vernon) Holdsworth, Harlan; other relatives and friends.
