Paul William, son of Raymond and Melvina (Kuhl) Vollstedt, was born September 13, 1936 at the Manning General Hospital, Manning, IA. The family lived near Irwin and in 1939 moved to a farm near Manning. He attended rural school through the sixth grade and finished his education in the Manning Public School District. He was elected to membership in the National Honor Society and Quill and Scroll. After graduation in 1954, Paul farmed with his father and drove livestock trucks. In early 1959 he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving in the Seabees Mobile Construction Battalion at Brown Air Field in California and in Guam. He was in the Naval Reserve after his active duty for a number of years before his honorable discharge in 1965. Paul returned to farming in the Manning area after his active duty and was also a part-time truck driver for Wayne Schroeder from 1956 to 1978. After that he farmed full time until his retirement in 1998. His health had declined since 1992 which prompted him to have a farm sale in 1999. Paul continued to work part time at agriculture related jobs, including one summer on a ranch in Wyoming. Paul lived in the Manning area until his retirement when he lived in Lake City for four years to be near his sister. He returned to Manning in 2003. Paul was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church where he was baptized and confirmed. He was also a member of the VFW where he served as an officer for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed his dogs and horses, fishing, hunting, travel, photography and reading. He especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Paul's health was a problem all during his retirement. However, he remained independent until entering the Manning Regional Healthcare Center before his death there on Friday, January 11, 2013 at the age of 76 years, 3 months and 29 days.
