Paul Gunnar Christensen, the son of Anton and Margrethe (Rasmussen) Christensen, was born March 16, 1925, on the family farm near Elk Horn, Iowa. He died July 9, 2017, at the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn, Iowa at the age of 92 years, 3 months, 23 days.
Paul attended country school south of Kimballton, Iowa, and graduated from Audubon High School in 1943. He entered the Army in 1945 and served in Japan during World War II. After being honorably discharged, he returned to his hometown and began farming.
On October 10, 1947, Paul was united in marriage to Vita Kaltoft at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Kimballton, Iowa. Three children were born to this union: Steven, Karl, and Karen. Along with raising the children, they continued farming, raising crops and livestock. Paul and Vita also operated a custom drapery business out of their home for over 20 years. He retired as owner/operator of the Century Farm at the age of 70.
Paul was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Kimballton, where he was a lifetime member. He enjoyed serving as President of the church board, and was active in the church choir. He was also a Mason and Shriner. Family meant everything to Paul. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Vita; his parents; an infant sister, Sylvia; daughter-in-law Carol Christensen; brother, Arild and wife Edna Mae; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Ove Heilskov; Leland and Helen Jo Kaltoft; LaVerne and Martha Kaltoft; Howard and Kaja Juel; and Alfred Christensen.
He is survived by three children: Steven Christensen (Joni) of Elk Horn; Karl Christensen (Earlene) of Elk Horn; and Karen Weddum (Dean) of Basehor, KS. Six grandchildren: Mathew Christensen (Kristi) of Ankeny; Lisa Chance (Greg) of West Des Moines; Krystal Wells (Jeremy) of Omaha, NE; Kayla Sander (Adam) of Ames; Nathan Weddum (Teresa) of Gilbert, AZ; Kaitlin Cichy (William) of Bella Vista, AR; two step-grandchildren: Bryce Hancock of Arvada, CO; and Chelsey Hancock of Elk Horn. Fourteen great grandchildren: Hailee, Jerra, and Makayla Christensen; Emerson and Liam Chance; James and Avery Wells; Jude and Gwyneth Sander; Kyle Best, Ella, and Macy Weddum; Annika and Marek Cichy. Sisters Ingrid Heilskov of Hampton; and Blanche Jacobsen (Allan) of Audubon; sister-in-law Oda Christensen of Kimballton; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and many friends.
