Joel Patrick, son of James and Diane (Young) Sutton, was born December 7, 1965, in Eddyville, Iowa. He grew up in Eddyville and graduated from Eddyville High School in 1984.
Joel was united in marriage with Teri Sedore and two children were born to this couple. They later divorced, but continued to remain friends.
In 2000, Joel was blessed with another marriage, this time with Sheila Lamb and two children were born to this union.
Joel served 22 years in the U. S. Air Force attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. He enlisted in 1987 and served as a Fuel Specialist and later on as a recruiter. He was stationed in Germany, Las Vegas, Korea and Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. He also served deployments to Turkey and Iraq before being honorably discharged in 2009.
Joel grew up in the Catholic Faith and aspired to serve the Lord. As he exited the military life, he was invited to minister United Methodist congregations in southern Iowa. He pastored churches in Lorimor, Macksburg, Hebron, Afton and Arispe. In 2019, he accepted a call to the dual parish of Manning United Methodist Church and United Church of Manilla.
Joel loved to learn and developed numerous hobbies throughout his life. A few of these hobbies include: riding bicycle (especially on RAGBRAI), woodturning and carving, telescopes, model rockets and RC cars, yo-yos, origami, playing the ukulele, crocheting, building legos, fishing, kayaking, camping, glassblowing and baking. Joel was extremely proud of his family and cherished the time spent with them.
On Monday, May 24, 2021, Joel suffered a heart attack while enjoying a bike ride and subsequently passed away at Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning. He was 55 years, 5 months and 12 days of age.
Joel was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father-in-law Jim Lamb. He is survived by his wife Sheila Sutton of Manning; five children: Megan Sutton of Lorimor; Shea (Steven) Sutton of Albia; Taylor McDonald of Johnston; Kate Sutton of Manning and Ian Sutton of Manning; seven grandchildren: Tristan, Elijah, Waylon, Finnegan, Meko, Bane and Isabelle; his parents James and Diane Sutton of Eddyville; three brothers: James (Phyllis) Sutton of Eddyville; John (Max) Lizama-Sutton of Benicia, California; Chris (Angie) Sutton of Eddyville; Mother-in-law Rosella Lamb of Lorimor and Sheila's sisters Tracey Lamb of Creston and Lacey Lamb of Lorimor; and several nieces and nephews.
