Norma Mae, daughter of Hubert and Helen (Kreger) Knight, was born June 27, 1927 near Glidden, in rural Carroll County, Iowa. She continued to live with her parents on that farm and attended Coon Rapids schools, graduating with the Class of 1945. She attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls and earned a teaching certificate. Norma taught country school for several years north of Coon Rapids.
On February 24, 1946, Norma was united in marriage with Lincoln Thomas at Trinity Lutheran Church northwest of Bayard. Three sons were born to this union. The family lived on a farm east of Bayard and moved into Bayard in 1966.
Throughout her life Norma had many occupations. She was a mother, farmer, waitress and an insurance agent. She was very proud of her service as the city clerk of Bayard for many years.
Norma was a "people" person who truly enjoyed people. Her greatest passions in life were the town and people of Bayard and the Bayard Lions Club. Her dedication to the Lions Club led to her election as a District Governor.
Norma and Lincoln moved to Clinton in 2006 after their retirement to be nearer their sons. When her health began to fail, she became a resident of Mercy Living Center North in Clinton. She died there peacefully in her sleep on Monday, May 11, 2009, at the age of 81 years, 10 months and 14 days.
Norma was preceded in death by one son Tam Thomas and her parents Hubert and Helen Knight.
Norma is survived by her husband of 63 years Lincoln Thomas; two sons Tom Thomas and wife Sherry and Tim Thomas and wife Lupe, all of Clinton; four grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister Mary and husband Loren Pevestorf of Nevada; numerous nephews and nieces; two cousins who were like sisters to her, Fern Betts of Bayard and Darlene Antisdale of Glidden; and many friends.
The family asks that memorials be made to the Bayard Public Library in Normas memory.
