Nicholas Edward, son of J.J. and Margaret (Flies) Lappe was born April 5, 1913 near Carroll, Iowa. He attended Sts. Peter and Paul parochial school thru the eighth grade. He then spent two years at Columbia School in Dubuque before graduating from Carroll High School in 1930. After the death of his father who was in his 40s, Nick lived in town with his mother and siblings. After graduation, Nick worked for an interior decorating firm that specialized in church interiors. After two years he moved to California to follow his sweetheart and worked in church interior design there. On October 27, 1937 Nick was united in marriage with Frances Margaret Conner in Palo Alto, CA. As World War II escalated and safety on the west coast became questionable, Nick and Frances moved back to Iowa. They farmed for a total of 45 years, first near Carroll on the family farm and then near Creston for a number of years. They were the parents of six children. Nick was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll. He enjoyed music and taught himself to play the keyboard and sang for many years in the Elks Club Chorus. In his spare time and retirement, he enjoyed raising roses, golfing, hunting, and playing cards, games and chess with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. When it became difficult for Nick to care for his wife as her health declined, they moved to Jackson, MN in 1994 to be nearer their sons. Frances died on September 27, 1995 and Nick continued to live independently in his own home. With the help of his family he was able to remain at home as his health declined. His mind remained sharp till the end. He died at home in Jackson on Thursday, June 13, 2013 at the age of 100 years, 4 months and 5 days. Preceding him in death are his wife Frances Lappe, daughter Gail Lappe at two years of age, son Richard Lappe, siblings Susan Nelson, Florence Lappe, Irene Curran and Anthony Lappe.
