Nellie Frances, daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Fremmel) Piper, was born February 25, 1914, at home north of Vail, Iowa. She graduated from Vail High School in 1932.
Nellie was united in marriage with Lawrence Cook at St. Anns Catholic Church in Vail on November 28, 1934. One son, Lloyd, was born to this union. They farmed north of Vail until 1946 when they moved to Minnesota. The family returned full-time to Wall Lake, Iowa in 1956 and they continued to farm.
Nellie worked from that time until 1964 at the Wall Lake Popcorn plant. She was united in marriage with Raymond George Witt at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning on December 17, 1964. Ray continued to farm south of Manning until 1972 when they retired and moved into Manning. That same year Ray and Nellie started traveling and spending winters in the warmer southern climate. When Rays health started to fail in 2000, they ended their winter stays in Texas. After Ray died in 2003, Nellie continued to live in their home.
Nellie was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Manning and longtime member of the Tri-County Social Club. When living in the South during the winter months, Ray and Nellie enjoyed playing shuffleboard, dancing and visiting with their many new friends. She always enjoyed flower gardening and going for her daily walk.
During the past year, Nellie had been dealing with some health troubles. Following a short stay at the Manning Regional Healthcare Center in Manning, Iowa, she died suddenly on November 26, 2007. She was 93 years, 7 months and 1 day old.
Nellie is preceded in death by her parents; husband Ray Witt; step-sons Larry Witt and Russell Witt; and first husband Lawrence Cook.
She is survived by her son Lloyd Cook and wife Linda of Wall Lake; stepchildren: Charlene and husband Fred Stokey of Omaha, NE and Ardith Mann of Omaha, NE; stepdaughter-in-law Doris Witt of Manning; 6 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 9 step grandchildren; 20 step great-grandchildren; 8 step great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Ruthana Witt of Carroll; other relatives and friends.
