Myrtle Otto

April 26, 1922 — February 4, 2016

Myrtle Louise, daughter of Lewis and Bertha (Joachimsen) Hagedorn, was born April 26, 1922 in Ewoldt Township, Carroll County, Iowa. She was baptized September 9, 1927 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Denison and confirmed October 22, 1953 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.

Myrtle attended rural school in Carroll County near her home through the eighth grade. After completing her schooling, she remained at home to help her mother with the housework and the outside work. As a young girl she enjoyed playing with the neighborhood kids and riding her pony.

On March 17, 1943 Myrtle was united in marriage with Elmer C. Otto. (Her sister Dalores married Elmer’s brother Louie.) Two children were born to this union. The family lived on their farm northwest of Aspinwall where Myrtle enjoyed helping Elmer with the outside work. They had a large vegetable garden and did a lot of canning. Over the years, Myrtle and Elmer took many fishing trips together. She thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and always seemed to have a positive attitude.

After 47 years on the farm, Myrtle and Elmer purchased a home in Manning. Elmer passed away February 2, 1999 and Myrtle continued to live in their home. When her health no longer permitted her to live alone she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home on April 25, 2011. She died there on Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the age of 93 years, 9 months and 9 days.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband Elmer; three brothers Lorn Hagedorn, Lewis Hagedorn (Marie) and Alvin Hagedorn (Norma Jean); two sisters Elberta Grimm (Ernest) and Dalores Otto (Louie); and six brothers in law Heinie Otto (Viola), Rudy Malone, Walter Dammann (Malinda), William Otto (Irene) and Bennie Otto (Geniece).

Myrtle is survived by her two children Joyce Vinke (Gary) of Pisgah, Iowa and Duane Otto (Kay) of Manning; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and step great grandchildren; sister in law Milda Malone of Carroll; nieces, nephew, other relatives and friends.
