Mildred "Mickey" Wenzel

January 19, 1919 — November 27, 2015

Mildred “Mickey”, daughter of Clarence and Maude (Gillespie) Loomer, was born January 19, 1919 in Spencer, Iowa. She joined two brothers Robert and James and two sisters Gertrude and Ruth. Mildred graduated from Spencer High School and continued her education at Iowa State Teacher’s College (now UNI). After graduation she taught at Bussey, Iowa for two years before taking a job in Manilla where she taught for 28 years. One of the highlights later in her life was being introduced and receiving a standing ovation from her former students at a Manilla All- School Reunion.

In December of 1944 Mickey was united in marriage with Paul Robertson at Elk Point, NE and became the mother to Myrna Robertson Murray, Donald Robertson, Barbara Robertson and Larry Robertson. Then on May 30, 1946 Mickey and Paul became the parents of Daniel Robertson. She had gotten the nickname Mickey from Paul because he loved the song “Mickey” and thought it described her. On May 11, 1960, her husband Paul died tragically at age 52 of cancer after a very brief illness.

In 1962 Mickey was united in marriage with Earl Schwieso, a 52 year old local bachelor farmer. They had seven good years together before he was killed in a car wreck in October of 1969. Also killed in the wreck was Ellen Wenzel, the wife of his lifelong friend Elmer Wenzel.
Mickey and Elmer Wenzel were married the next year and she acquired two new adult ‘children’ Jo Ann Wenzel Rankin and Wayne Wenzel. They enjoyed over 19 years together, including winters at Rock Shadows in Apache Junction, AZ. While living in Manilla she was a member of United Methodist Church. After the death of Elmer in 1990 Mickey moved permanently to Rock Shadows.
Mickey’s family sincerely thanks all her friends at Rock Shadows who helped her maintain her independence until the last few days of her life, especially Sharon, Nana, Harry, Celine and Gary. After a few days in Promise Hospital at Mesa, AZ, Mickey died there on Friday, November 27, 2015 at the age of 96 years, 10 months and 8 days.    Preceding her in death are her parents; siblings; three husbands and daughter Myrna (Bob) Murray; grandson Paul Robertson; and son in law George Doyel.
Mickey is survived by her children: Donald (Marcia) Robertson of Plano, TX; Barbara Doyel of Manning; Larry (Shirley) Robertson of Lake View; Daniel (Kathy) Robertson of Louisburg, KS; JoAnn Rankin of Des Moines and Wayne (Chris) Wenzel of Des Moines;  numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends and former students.
Grandma Mickey will be greatly missed by family and friends left behind….and we know she has been warmly welcomed by those who have “gone ahead.”
