Mervin "Tom" Moore

July 11, 1927 — December 21, 2017

Mervin Thomas, son of Marion and Hazel (Ohm) Moore, was born July 11, 1927, in Guthrie County, Iowa. He attended country school in Guthrie County and graduated from Bayard High School.
Tom enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 18, 1945, and trained at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Illinois; Camp Parks, California and Treasure Island, California. He then traveled through Pearl Harbor, Hawaii to Guam where he helped construct power plants with the 23rd U.S. Naval Construction Battalion. Tom was honorably discharged on July 21, 1946. He then returned to Iowa and worked as a farmhand and in construction.
On March 10, 1951, Tom was united in marriage with Patsy Mowrey, in New Hampton, Iowa. Two sons were born to this marriage. Tom and Patsy made their home at Bayard. Tom worked 15 years as a road grader, and then trucked until retiring in 1989.
Tom was a member of the Bayard Church of Christ (baptized in 1944) and the American Legion. Throughout the years, he served on the Bayard Volunteer Fire Department and Bayard City Council. He enjoyed gardening, carpentry, fishing, and working at Springbrook Education Center. Tom was a kind, ornery flirt who knew how to make you laugh and smile.
On Thursday, December 21, 2017, Tom passed away at Regency Park Nursing Home in Jefferson, Iowa, following a lengthy illness. He was 90 years of age.
Tom is survived by his wife Patsy of Bayard; Sons Tommy Moore and wife Cindy of Bayard and Ricky Moore and wife Lisa of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma; three grandchildren: Emily, James and Jonathan Moore; a brother Ronald Moore of Menlo.
