Melvin William Potthoff

Melvin Potthoff, 92, passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2017 after suffering a brief illness.

Mel was born on February 20, 1925 in Carroll, IA to Henry and Clementine (Wittrock) Potthoff.  He married Betty (Bruning) Potthoff on February 17, 1947. Mel and Betty were blessed to celebrate the special milestone of their 70th wedding anniversary earlier this year.

Mel is survived by his wife Betty and six children; Craig (Marilyn) Potthoff of Clive, Kathy (Gary) Kuhl of Waukee, Mary (Don) Rowedder of Rogers, MN, Jeanne (Ed) Samame of Johnston, Brian (Lori) Potthoff of Manning, and Jeff (Lisa) Potthoff of Van Meter. He has 23 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.  He is also survived by his sister Arlene Rupiper of Carroll, brother Merle (Lila) Potthoff of Halbur, sister Lois (Don) Hinners of Carroll, sister Joyce (Dick) Wright of Carroll, and brother-in-law Danny Rowedder of Halbur.

Mel was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Norbert Potthoff and wife Irma of Wall Lake, his sister Carol Rowedder of Halbur, and brother-in-law Ernie Rupiper of Roselle.

During his life, Mel enjoyed farming, golfing with his brothers, playing cards at the VFW, watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and spending time with his family. Mel and Betty owned Mel’s Place in Halbur and enjoyed sponsoring Mel’s Angels, the men’s softball team for many years. Mel was a huge Chicago Cubs fan and had waited a lifetime to witness his team become World Series Champions in 2016. Mel will always be remembered for his ornery sense of humor, having a smile for everyone and making the best high balls in town. He will be deeply missed by his family and countless friends.

His family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. McLaws and the wonderful staffs at the Manning Regional Health Center and Plaza, who have always treated Mel and Betty like gold.

The family will receive guests on Tuesday, May 30 from 4:30 – 7 p.m. at Ohde Funeral Home in Manning,  with rosary at 5 p.m. and prayer service at 6 p.m.  A celebration of life for Mel will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Manning at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 31 with internment at the Catholic cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the parish hall.
