Melvin “Mel” Don Jackson was born on February 2, 1951, in Franklin, Nebraska, to Donald and Eula Jackson. He graduated with the Class of 1969 from Franklin High School. After graduation, Mel proudly enlisted in the United States Army, serving his country until his honorable discharge.
Upon returning home, Mel settled in Omaha, Nebraska, where he worked for Midcontinental Bottlers, filling and repairing soda machines. During this time, he met Barbara “Barb” Blum. The two were united in marriage on June 1, 1974, at Sacred Heart Church in Barb’s hometown of Manning, Iowa.
Shortly after their wedding, Mel and Barb moved to Manning. Mel began working at the Manning Creamery before transitioning to truck driving. He later joined Farmland, where he worked for five years, and then found his true calling in maintenance at the Manning Hospital. Mel dedicated over 18 years to the hospital before retiring at the age of 65.
Mel was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for deer and turkey hunting, a love he shared with his grandchildren, particularly when they spent time together grinding deer meat in the garage—a memory they will always treasure. He also enjoyed fishing and camping. Above all, Mel cherished time with his family, and his grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He took great joy in cooking and barbecuing, often preparing meals for his beloved wife, Barb, and the people he loved.
On November 14, 2024, Mel passed away peacefully at MercyOne in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 73 years, nine months, and 12 days. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Eula Jackson; his sisters, Veda (Stan) Williams and Jan (Ken) Burwell; and his brother-in-law, Wayne Robinson; and nephew, Gary Jackson.
Mel is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Barb Jackson of Manning; daughters: LeeAnn Jackson of Independence, Missouri, Sara Jackson of Clinton, Teresa Rudolph of Ida Grove, and Mandy Diimig of Battle Creek; cherished grandchildren: Quinn Jackson, Kyra Rudolph, Chloe Rudolph, Dane Ossman, Justice Diimig, Tyler Diimig, Jasmine Diimig, and Landyn Diimig; great-grandchildren: Malachi, Violet and Kove; sister, Cindy Robertson; and other family members and friends.
