     Maxine Lenore, daughter of Nels and Edna Mae (Johnson) Peterson, was born October 23, 1923, on the family farm near Atlantic, Iowa. She attended country school around Atlantic. After her schooling Maxine began working as a babysitter, egg candler, and as a painter.

   On November 17, 1942, Maxine was united in marriage with Emery W. Carlson in Maryville, Missouri. Maxine worked as a waitress and cook at the Danish Inn in Elk Horn and another 10 years as a housekeeper and breakfast server for the AmericInn.

  Maxine was a member of the Elk Horn Lutheran Church and the American Legion Auxiliary for many years. In her spare time she enjoyed nature, and collecting antiques, Santa figurines, and frogs.

  Maxine worked hard all of her life and continued working until she became ill in May 2007.  She then became a resident at Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn.  On October 31, she was transferred to Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan, Iowa where she died on November 10, 2007 at the age of 84 years and 18 days.

     Preceding Maxine in death are her parents; husband in 1986; and three sisters: Dorothy Will, Ellen Petersen, and Jeanette Cavanaugh.

   She is survived by daughter Marion and husband Bruce Bailey of Panora; son Rodney Carlson and wife Marcia of Atlantic; five grandchildren: Robin and husband Alan Hauswirth; Scott Bailey and wife Amy; Kent Bailey and wife Nikki; Brian Carlson and friend Jeanette Carr and Adam Carlson; eight great-grandchildren: Aubrey Hauswirth, Austin Hauswirth, Allison Bailey, Abigail Bailey, Morgan Bailey, Brooklyn Bailey, Anthony Carlson, and Brandon Carlson; four sisters: Elsie South of Atlantic; Alvina Rutherford of Silver City, NM; Betty and husband Harry Knight of Atlantic and Clara Peterson of Atlantic; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
