Mary R. Lux

Mary Rebecca, daughter of George M. and Mary (Mattes) Schumacher, was born on October 11, 1916 at Casey, Adair County, Iowa. In 1918 she moved with her family to a farm near Parkston, South Dakota. She attended Sacred Heart Church and graduated from Sacred Heart Grade School in Parkston. In 1938 the family moved to a farm in Carroll County, Iowa where they were members of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish. In 1947 Mary moved with her family to Carroll and was a member of St. Lawrence Parish. On November 18, 1947 she was united in marriage with John J. Lux at St. Lawrence Church by Rev. Arthur Poeckes. After their marriage they lived in Lidderdale where John operated a portable mill for many years. In her early years as a homemaker Mary cultivated a large flower and vegetable garden and preserved its produce. They were members of Holy Family Parish in Lidderdale where Mary later became the Parish's oldest living member. After her husband's death in 1986 Mary continued living in Lidderdale until she moved to the Carroll Health Center in November 2003 and to St. Anthony Nursing Home in January 2004. On July 1, 2010 Mary died there at 93 years of age. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter Mary Ann Lux; granddaughter Julie Lux; brothers: George, Victor and Leonard Schumacher and Jacob Schumacher and wife Margaret; sisters: Florence and husband Floyd Fitch; Lillian and husband Charles Boaz; Grace and husband Alvin Wenck and Margaret Slacks. She is survived by her daughter Ruth Lux of Lidderdale; son Kenneth and wife Peggy of Carroll; granddaughter Jenny and husband Mitch Vote of Paton; 3 great-grandchildren: Madison, Jacie and Landon; sister-in-law: Marie Schumacher of Breda; brother-in-law John Slacks of Boone and nieces and nephews.
