Mary M., daughter of Emmert and Mary M. (Kelley) Marcy, was born March 12, 1916, at Avoca in Steuben County, New York. She attended school at Avoca. After her schooling, Mary worked as an electric arc welder at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston, MA. In July of 1944, Mary enlisted in the United States Army and served in the WAC as a truck driver and light mechanic at Camp Patrick Henry, Virginia. Mary attained the rank of Private First Class and was honorably discharged in March of 1946. On May 2, 1946, Mary was united in marriage with Earl Louis Putt at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The couple lived in Pennsylvania for a short time before moving to Webster City, Iowa, eventually settling in Westside in 1962. Mary earned her GED in the 1970s by attending night school. Mary worked as a stay-at-home mom and bookkeeper for Earls auto salvage business. She enjoyed quilting and was a prolific member of the Busy Thimbles quilting group in Westside. Mary and Earl loved to fish and hunt together. For a number of years Mary was a collector and dealer of miniature bottles. She was honored with a gubernatorial citation for helping to save a mans life. Mary was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia and a life-member of the American Legion. She was also a member of the Fort-Nightly Club. In the early 1990s, Mary became a resident of St Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa, where she died Monday, December 5, 2005, following a lengthy illness. She was 89 years, 8 months and 23 days of age. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters Nettie Brite and Bernice Herbert and two brothers Oscar Marcy and George Marcy. She is survived by her husband Earl Putt of Westside; sons Carl Putt of Texas and Richard Putt and wife Pam of Lake View; a daughter from a previous marriage, Sylvia; grandchildren Theresa Putt; Casey Putt; and Jacob Putt and fianc Melissa Pullen; great-grandchildren Tarissa Putt and Anthony Eads; sister Goldie Slocum of Elkland, PA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
