Mary Mccaffrey

January 10, 1920 — April 6, 2013

Mary Ella, daughter of August Sr. and Mathilda (Kohls) Schnuettgen, was born January 10, 1920 on her parents' farm near Buck Grove, Iowa. She was raised in Defiance and attended St. Paul's Catholic School there. On April 21, 1941, Mary was united in marriage with Robert E. McCaffrey at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Defiance. They made their home on a farm near Manilla and were the parents of six children. Mary was a wonderful mother and homemaker, cooking and baking many delicious holiday meals. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, quilting, sewing, and crocheting. She had a soft spot for the dogs and horses on the farm and also helped her husband manage the farm. She was particularly interested in raising livestock. In later years, she played cards and took many trips with her close friends. She treasured time spent with her children and their families and attending the yearly family campout. The Denver Broncos and Duke Blue Devils were her favorite teams to watch. Mary was a member of Sacred Heart Parish in Manilla and the Sacred Heart Altar and Rosary Society. She was devoted to her Catholic faith. In addition, she was a member of the Friendly Farmers Club. Mary continued to live on the farm after the untimely death of her husband in 1960. When she became ill she entered the Manilla Manor Nursing Home on April 4, 2012. She died there on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the age of 93 years, 2 months and 27 days. Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; daughter Carolyn Smith; grandson Michael Smith; two sisters Dolores Gross and MaDonna Schmitz and four brothers Othmar Oats', August Jr. Gus', John and Eugene Schnuettgen.
