Mary Ann, daughter of Rudolph and Mary (Underberg) Nees, was born September 13, 1934, in Carroll, Iowa. She graduated from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic High School in 1952. Mary Ann then worked at a grocery store in Carroll
On October 2, 1956, Mary Ann was united in marriage with Engelbert Wendelin Brandt at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Six children were born to this union. Mary Ann and Bert farmed 3 ½ miles east of Manilla on Highway 141. Mary Ann was an active member of Sacred Heart Church in Manilla, which included the Altar and Rosary Society, adult choir, and a quilting group, among others. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society and Helping Hands Club. She enjoyed raising her children, helping out with their special school events, cooking, gardening (especially flower gardening), quilting, crocheting, needlepoint and cross stitching. Mary Ann and Bert were members of Polka of America, Iowa Chapter and enjoyed going polka dancing on Sunday evenings.
After Bert passed away on October 19, 1998, Mary Ann continued to live on the farm until 2002 when she moved into a custom built home in Manilla. During this time, she enjoyed visiting her children out of state and traveling on trips sponsored by the bank.
In September of 2016, she became a resident of Manning Senior Living in Manning, Iowa, where she passed away on Tuesday, February 25, 2020. Mary Ann was 85 years, 5 months and 12 days of age.
Besides her parents and husband, Mary Ann is preceded in death by four brothers: Marvin Nees, Francis Nees, Donald Nees and Elmer Nees; and three sisters: Florence Chamberlain, Rita Dentlinger, and Rosella Berger.
She is survived by six children: Michael Brandt and wife Sue of Atlanta, Georgia; Patrick Brandt and wife Dorothy of Denison; Gerald Brandt and wife Tricia of Manilla; Lori and husband Ed Loman of Venice, Florida; Lisa and husband Derek Dixon of Mesa, Arizona; David Brandt and wife Dawn of Manilla; fifteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers Kenneth Nees of Mt. Carmel, Iowa and Duane Nees of Cincinnati, Ohio; and by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
