Alan Schroeder was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 26, 1953. He was the last and fourth child born to Violet and Merle Schroeder. Mark was baptized on January 10, 1954, in the basement of the then being built Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. He grew up on a farm four miles north of Manilla. He attended East Boyer #7 country school for his Kindergarten year and then when the country schools closed, he joined his siblings in attending Manilla Community Schools. Mark was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church on June 2, 1968. Mark loved music and playing his trumpet at school events besides playing for special worship services, his sister’s wedding and taps in the community cemeteries. Upon graduating from high school, he received the John Philip Souza Award.
He also enjoyed traveling with his sister Connie and family as they camped their way to the west coast and also to south Texas and to the Grand Canyon in different summers. Mark had such a happy disposition. It was such a pleasure to be in his company. Mark’s nephews and niece always enjoyed his company and he theirs whenever they came to Iowa to visit.
Mark had a very caring spirit which was evident when his dad had a stroke and he cared for him those two years before his death. And then he cared for his mother until she entered the Manor in Manilla. The past years he was caring for his brother, Lynn, who was homebound. That’s what he was doing on the day of his death, January 17, 2024. The coroner named it a coronary event.
Mark is survived by his sister Connie (Bill) Natzke of Rochester, MN; his brother Lynn Schroeder of Manilla and his sister Carmen Schroeder of Papillion, NE; three nephews: Todd (Shannon) Natzke; Ryan (Kristin) Natzke; and Dean (Cindi) Edmunds; a niece Sarah (Larry) Willmott and by numerous great nephews and nieces and three great great nephews and a niece.
