Marie Kathryn, daughter of Ben and Elizabeth (Schrad) Schroer was born on April 9, 1919 at Maple River, Iowa. She attended school in Maple River and then stayed home to help on her family farm.     On October 15, 1945 Marie and the love of her life, Melvin Herman Hamers were united in marriage at St. Francis Church in Maple River. The couple made their home on a farm near Maple River where Marie worked as a homemaker.    After Melvins death in 1983, Marie moved to Carroll.  There she remained active as a member of Holy Spirit Parish. She was a member of the Legion of Mary and the Ladies Guild. In her spare time she volunteered with R.S.V.P. and worked on quilting projects through Holy Spirit Church.     As her health began to decline, Marie moved to the Mitchellville to be closer to her sister. In 2003 she became a resident of the Mitchellville Care Center and on December 2, 2008 she died there at the age of 89 years, 7 months and 23 days.    Marie was preceded in death by her parents; husband Melvin; brother Elmer Schroer and wife Anita; and nephew Gerald Schroer.    She is survived by her sister Helen Schleisman of Des Moines; nephews: Terry Schleisman of Ankeny; Jerome Schroer of Albuquerque, NM; Ronald Schroer of Sun City, TX; and Gary Schroer of Omaha, NE; nieces: Marilyn Debelius of Ohio; Jean Boot of Ames; Linda Dorr of Clive; Becky Pitman Horner of Mitchellville and Joleen Fasbender of Carroll; other relatives and friends.
