Marie C. Glass

Marie Catherine, daughter of Nicholas and Anna (Rettenmaier) Wittry was born on May 30, 1921 at Mt. Carmel, Iowa. Marie grew up in the Maple River area and graduated from St. Angela's Academy in Carroll in 1941. She then worked for Farm Bureau in Carroll. On August 27, 1947 Marie was united in marriage with Robert F. Glass at St. Francis Church in Maple River. Six children were born into this union and the family made their home on a farm north of Halbur. Marie was an active member of St. Augustine Parish and choir, Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Ladies of St. Clare. She enjoyed crocheting, needlepoint projects, caring for flowers and plants, cooking and visiting with family and friends. Marie especially loved playing cards with her girlfriends. After the death of her husband, Robert, in 1999, Marie moved to Carroll. In 2007 she became a resident of St. Anthony Nursing Home. On March 21, 2012 Marie died there at the age of 90 years, 8 months and 21 days. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, step-mother Ella Wittry; grandsons Scott and Aaron McCarthy and brothers: Louis, Carl and Lawrence Wittry. Marie is survived by her children: Bill Glass and special friend Carolyn Stewart of Bowie, TX; Mary Ellen Doyle and husband G.W. Steincross of San Diego, CA; Jeanne Marie Glass of Minnetonka, MN; Jon Glass and wife Marian of Dallas, TX; Steve Glass and wife Lenetha of Murfreesboro, TN and Louis Glass and wife Kelly of Carroll; 14 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sisters Rita Ann and husband Paul Venner of Breda and Anita Mae Tegels of Carroll; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
