Marcella "Sally" Gehrke

Marcella Clara Sally', daughter of Frank and Bertha (Testroet) Burgart, was born July 15, 1919 at New Hampton, Iowa. She attended school in Shell Rock and then graduated from St. Boniface High School in Ionia. On June 28, 1952, Sally was united in marriage with Loyal Gehrke at Kansas City. They moved to Carroll to make their home nearer her mother and brothers. Loyal was on the police force and they operated a venetian blind store for a number of years. Then Sally started working as the clerk at Joe's Paint where she remained for 37 years. She developed a special friendship with Joe and his family. In her spare time she enjoyed playing cards and collecting elephant figurines. Sally was a member of the Moose Lodge and an avid reader. After Loyal died, Sally remained in Carroll until 2005 when she moved to Charles City to Riverside Assisted Living. When her health began to fail she became a resident at Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City. She died there on, October 15, 2013 at the age of 94 years and 3 months. Preceding her in death are her husband; parents; brothers Hubert Burgart, Cletus Burgart, Joe Burgart and sister Leona Hardin. She is survived by many nieces and nephews, including Barbara Havlik, Joan (John) Hill, Mary Hoeft, Richard (Suzanne) Burgart, Elaine (Tom) Keating, Tom (Dorann) Burgart, Dan (Jennifer) Burgart and other relatives and friends.
