Madlyn Luella, daughter of Leon and Emma (Volquartsen) Cramer, was born November 8, 1927, at home in Crawford County, Iowa. She attended grade school and high school in Manning, graduating with the Class of 1946. After high school Madlyn worked at several grocery stores in Manning.
On December 9, 1946, Madlyn was united in marriage with Gordon L. Younie at his parents’ home in Manilla. Two children, Sandra and Randall, were born to this union. Madlyn worked at various cafes in the Manilla area and at L.R. Nelson in Manning. She also worked as a cook at the Manilla School and then ran the Unity Café in Manilla for 10 years. She then worked as a nurses’ aide at the Manilla Manor. Her husband Gordon died on February 27, 1987, and in 1993 Madlyn retired. She continued to live in Manilla.
In her spare time, Madlyn enjoyed going on family outings and watching movies. She was a long-time member of the Methodist Church in Manilla and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Madlyn lived on her own and continued to drive for many years. However, after a fall, her health eventually began to fail. She could no longer live on her own, and she became a resident of the Manning Plaza Nursing Home in February of 2009. She died there on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at the age of 88 years, 5 months and 1 day.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; sister Audrey Olsen and her husband LaVerne; and three half-sisters Esther, Ellen and Altha. Madlyn is survived by her two children Sandra (Don) Nemitz of Ankeny and Randall Younie (Mila) of Woodbine; three grandchildren Jeff Nemitz (Tracy), Chris Nemitz, and Erin (Shawn) Wiebelhaus; four great-grandchildren Elizabeth and Benjamin Nemitz and Morgan and Aubrey Wiebelhaus; sister Pauline Graves of Manning; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
