Louie Bernard, son of Louie and Laura (Staudemeier) Andresen Sr., was born June 23, 1932 on the farm in Soldier Township, Crawford County, near Ute, Iowa. He grew up in the Charter Oak area one of three children. After completing his education at St. John's Lutheran School he farmed with his father. Later Louie served in the United States Army from 1955 - 1957 in the United States and Germany. On February 17, 1963 Louie was united in marriage with Betty Lengemann at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Louie had met Betty for the first time when he was a patient at the hospital in Denison where she worked. They lived and farmed near Charter Oak for five years and then near Ricketts for three years. When Betty's parents retired, they moved to the Lengemann farm east of Manning. They were the parents of three girls. The family belonged to Zion Lutheran Church in Manning. Louie was a lifelong farmer, raising cattle and hogs and grain for his animals. He liked to build and repair and was an accomplished welder. He built trailers, hay racks and gates among other farm equipment. When Betty could no longer get around at home she became a resident of the Manilla Manor Nursing Home in 2008. Louie continued to live on the farm, raise cattle and do field work. Louie and Betty were honored at a celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary in February 2013. Louie suffered a number of health problems over recent years, however he continued to farm and work hard when he was able.
