Lorretta Marie, was born on July 25, 1920 in Herndon, Iowa to Fred and Marie (Lee) Harvey. She spent part of her childhood in Clinton and Sabula before moving to Manilla, Iowa. While attending Manilla High School, Lorretta played the trumpet in the school's marching band and was a basketball player helping her team qualify for the state championship in 1935 and 1936. After graduation in 1937, she attended American Institute of Business in Des Moines and played on their basketball team. On December 1, 1940 Lorretta was united in marriage with Charles Schram, Jr and they took over the ownership of Schram's Market. When not working at the grocery store, Lorretta was active in her community. She belonged to the United Church of Manilla and sang in the choir, the Eastern Star, Past Matrons, the Federated Women's Club, the Daughters of the Nile, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Manilla Community Betterment Council. She served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Manilla Chamber of Commerce for ten years as well as serving on the Manilla Public Library Board for over sixty years and the Manilla Manor Board of Directors. In 1987 Lorretta was awarded the Governor's Leadership Award and was inducted into the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame in 1998, as well as the Iowa Hall of Pride. If there was something that needed to be done in Manilla, Lorretta was the first to volunteer. It was often said that Charles had the ideas, but Lorretta made sure it was done. When Lorretta was not traveling with Charles to different sporting events across Iowa and the nation, she enjoyed traveling with her friends to Europe, the Caribbean Islands and Hawaii. As often as possible she spent time in southern California visiting friends and family. While in Texas where she had moved to be near her daughter, Lorretta was a season ticket holder for the TCU women's basketball team, but she always cheered for the Iowa State team when they were in town. She loved playing dominoes, scrabble, working word searches and jigsaw puzzles. Though she lived in Texas for the past four years and had a Texas ID card in order to vote, Lorretta Schram was an Iowan through and through. Lorretta passed away in Ft. Worth, TX on Sunday, March 22, 2015 at the age of "94 and a half." Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Charles in 2004 and brother Frederick Lloyden. Lorretta is survived by her brother Larry Harvey (Shirley) of Perry, son Edward Schram (Marlys) of California, daughter Linda Schram (Kris) of Texas, grandchildren Kristen Benoit (Jacques), Kourtney Searles (Brendan) and Eddy Schram (Nicole) and six great grandchildren of California, five nieces and nephews, four cousins and many friends in Iowa and Texas.
