Loretta Sophie Pauline, daughter William and Amanda (Asmus) Ewoldt, was born December 31, 1922 at home on the farm in Crawford County, Iowa. She attended rural school through the eighth grade and then due to the untimely death of her father, stayed at home and helped with the family. Loretta was baptized on May 28, 1923 at the Lutheran Parsonage in Manilla and confirmed April 10, 1938 at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning.

On December 17, 1941 Loretta was united in marriage with Ralph Lewis Vinke in Missouri. They made their home in Manning. Loretta worked several places to support her family after the untimely death of her husband. She worked with Ida Dethlefs and her son Ken at the Klean Klose Shop, at the Manning General Hospital as a nurses’ aide and at Nelson Manufacturing.
