Leonard Joseph, son of Frank and Frances (Bierl) Halbur, was born February 3, 1927 near Halbur, Iowa. Leonard was baptized and confirmed at St. Augustine Church in Halbur, the town named after his great grandfather. He also attended school there. In 1945 Leonard enlisted in the United States Army. He served as a mail carrier in Germany, Holland and France before his honorable discharge in 1946. He returned to Iowa where he worked for farmers in the Carroll and Glidden areas. On November 26, 1948, Leonard was united in marriage with Darlene Thede at St. Mary's Church in Lake City by Reverend Father Roder. They had met at the free movies in Ralston. Leonard and Darlene were the parents of six children and farmed near Maple River from 1952 to 1982. After retiring from farming and moving to Carroll, they owned and managed apartments in Carroll until 2003. While Leonard cared for the upkeep of the apartments, Darlene worked as a nurses' aide. Leonard was a member of Holy Spirit Parish; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2642 and American Legion Post 7 and volunteered at congregate meals. He enjoyed watching western movies and television, especially if John Wayne was staring. He and Darlene faithfully watched country music on the RFD Channel. Playing cards, camping, and playing Nintendo were some of his favorite pastimes. Above all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Leonard had been experiencing heart problems and other issues with aging for a number of years. He entered St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll the week before his death there on Monday, May 27, 2013 at the age of 86 years, 3 months and 24 days. Preceding him in death are his parents; sons Joseph D.
