Lawrence "Larry" Handlos

September 21, 1941 — October 21, 2021

Lawrence Albert Handlos, son of Albert and Loretta (Lechtenberg) Handlos, was born September 21, 1941, on a farm in Carroll County Iowa. He grew up south of Manning and attended country school near his home before graduating from Manning High School in 1959. In 1961, he graduated from C.E. School of Commerce in Omaha, Nebraska with a degree in business and accounting. He first worked for Peterson and Peterson in Omaha. He then returned to Manning to work at the Manning Mill, later known as the Manning AG Center, before joining his father in farming.

On December 29, 1962, Larry was united in marriage with Barbara Knight in Omaha. They lived in Manning until 1966 when they moved to a farm south of town. Larry was an avid farmer and was meticulous in his record keeping and equipment maintenance. He was a founding member of the Audubon County Sheep Association and a founding member and past president of the Iowa Sheep Association. He was also active with the Audubon County Pork Producers and the Chester White Association and often served as judge at swine and sheep shows at county fairs in the area. In 1984, Larry and Barb moved into town where Larry was co-owner of Manning Motors. Larry worked at Pella Corporation in Carroll for a number of years and after retirement worked at Veterinary Associates in Manning.

Throughout the years Larry liked to hunt, fish, assemble model cars, and drive with the Corvette Club. He loved Johnny Cash, John Wayne, watching NASCAR and following the Cyclones and Hawkeyes in all sports. One of his great passions was riding his bike on many bike rides around the state, his favorite being RAGBRAI, which he did for many years. He made many great friends though the years and never knew a stranger!

For the past several years Larry has lived with dementia and after a brief period of declining health, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, October 21st, 2021 at Manning Regional Healthcare Center. He was 80 years and 1 month of age. He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Church in Manning.
