Lawrence Eskov

November 30, 1920 — January 2, 2016

Lawrence Mathiesen, son of Hans and Emma (Mathiesen) Eskov, was born November 30, 1920, on the farm near Elk Horn, Iowa.  He was raised in the Elk Horn area and graduated from Elk Horn High School.  After graduation he worked for area farmers until joining the United States Army during World War II. Lawrence served as a flight engineer on C47 cargo planes.  He was honorably discharged in March of 1947.

On May 26, 1945, Lawrence was united in marriage with Ethel Olson at San Antonio, Texas.  Back in Iowa, the couple farmed in the Fiscus, Marne and Elk Horn areas for their entire married lives.  Lawrence and Ethel enjoyed polka dancing together through the years.  They were members of Elk Horn Lutheran Church.  Lawrence enjoyed raising hogs, gardening, traveling and going to coffee to get the daily local news.  Ethel passed away in April of 2003.   Due to his declining health Lawrence moved to the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn in 2013.  He died there on Saturday, January 2, 2016, at the age of 95 years and 33 days.

Lawrence is preceded in death by his parents; wife Ethel Eskov; brother Roland Eskov and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

He is survived by his son Charles Kent (Cheryl) Eskov, Moville; daughter Mary Lea (Scott) Graham, Tulsa, Oklahoma; sisters-in-law: Martha Eskov of Elk Horn, Marilyn (Fairl) Johnson, Romona Yates and Karen Scheffler, all of Harlan; brothers-in-law: Ole (Betty) Olson, Dick (Sue) Olson and Kenneth Olson, all of Harlan; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
