Larry Lee, son of Henry and Florence (Schroeder) Thomssen, was born April 17, 1937, at home in Aspinwall, Iowa. He attended country school near Manilla and Aspinwall, graduating from Manning High School in 1955. After graduation, Larry worked a few years on the section gang for the Milwaukee Railroad. On June 28, 1959, Larry was united in marriage with Rose Ann Stegemann at the Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. Three children were born to this union. They settled in Manilla, where Larry worked for Joens Oil on Main Street for a short time. Larry bought the business in 1963, renaming it Larrys Standard Service. He closed the station and retired in 1993 due to a heart condition. Larry served on the Municipal Board of Trustees and volunteered for the fire department for many years, even serving as Fire Chief. He was also a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla. Larry was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, bird-watching, traveling to flea markets, tractor shows and antiquing. Most of all he enjoyed time with his family, especially his eight grandchildren. Larrys health began to decline and he was hospitalized in 2006 at Creighton University Medical Center. Larry died there on Thursday, May 18, 2006 due to complications from his last heart surgery in April. He was 69 years, 1 month, and 1 day of age. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and infant granddaughter, Kelsey Klindt. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Rose Ann Thomssen of Manilla; son Brent Thomssen and wife Lisa of Manilla; two daughters: Yvonne and husband Lee Klindt of Denison; and Lisa Sample of Denison; grandchildren: Sara, Anna, Tina, and Jessica Thomssen of Manilla; Kayla and husband Chris Hand of Carbondale, IL; Krista Klindt of Denison; Dustin Sample of Des Moines; and Melissa Sample of Denison: sisters: Darlyne and husband Edward Dahleen of Denison; Jean and husband Jim Christiansen of Denison; Judy and husband Leroy Lingle of Manilla; brother-in-law Darell Stegemann of Texas; sister-in-law Beth and husband Ron Cates of Carroll; other relatives and many friends.
